Rare Bird from Africa Draws Hundreds to Welsh Town

June 9, 2026 · BBC

A western reef heron, normally found in warmer countries, surprised bird watchers when it appeared in Caernarfon.

Hundreds of bird watchers traveled to Caernarfon, a town in north Wales, to see a very rare visitor. On Saturday morning, a bird expert spotted a western reef heron near the water. This type of heron normally lives in southern Europe, Africa, and parts of Asia. It was the first time this bird had ever been seen in Britain.

Simon Hugheston-Roberts found the special bird at 10:00 in the morning while taking his usual walk. He has been watching birds for many years and does monthly bird counts in the area. The gray-blue bird was flying over him near the shore. After getting a better look, he knew he had found something very special.

Hugheston-Roberts used his experience to identify the bird correctly. He had seen similar birds while bird watching in West Africa and the Middle East. The heron had a black face, which is very rare. He compared it to other herons he knew to make sure he was right. When a little egret joined the western reef heron, he could compare their sizes to confirm his discovery.

After finding the bird, Hugheston-Roberts told other bird watchers through a WhatsApp group. Word spread quickly through the bird watching community. By the afternoon, about 300 bird experts had arrived in the town. They all hoped to see this rare visitor for themselves.

Everyone has been very respectful and kept their distance so as not to disturb the bird.
