Tech Money Couldn't Save This San Francisco School

June 13, 2026 · Wired

Willie Brown Middle School got millions from tech companies but still failed its students.

The school cost 54 million dollars to build. It was the most expensive new public school in San Francisco history. Rich tech leaders like the man who started Twitter gave money to help. The school was built in a poor part of the city called Bayview.

The plan sounded great on paper. Every sixth grader would learn coding and robotics. Classes would be 80 minutes long so students could really dive deep into subjects. There would be free breakfast and lunch for everyone.

But on the first day of school, chaos broke out. Students got into fights. Teachers didn't know what to do when kids misbehaved. The principal quit after just one month.

The real problem wasn't the fancy building or computers. It was that San Francisco doesn't pay teachers enough money. Some teachers at the school made only 43,000 dollars a year. That's barely enough to rent a small apartment in San Francisco.

This story shows that money alone can't fix schools. You need good teachers, strong leaders, and a plan that actually works. Giving schools computers and robots might look impressive, but students need teachers who can afford to live in the city and stay at their jobs.

I felt like my daughter lost an entire semester.
