London Mayor Shows How Climate Policies Can Win Elections

June 3, 2026 · TIME

Sadiq Khan won reelection despite protests over his pollution rules, proving green policies can be popular.

London's mayor, Sadiq Khan, just finished his second term in office. He created tough new rules to fight pollution and climate change. Many people protested these rules, but Khan still won his reelection. His success shows that climate policies can be popular with voters.

Around the world, politicians are backing away from climate policies. Many right-wing politicians want to stop climate rules completely. Left-wing politicians are also pulling back from their promises. They think voters don't care about climate change anymore.

Khan's experience tells a different story. He faced lots of anger from some people about his green policies. Critics said his environmental rules would hurt his chances of winning reelection. But Khan survived the backlash and kept his job as mayor.

The biggest fight came in 2023 over Khan's pollution rules. He expanded something called the Ultra Low Emissions Zone, or ULEZ. This program charges drivers money if their cars pollute too much. The rules apply when people drive in most parts of London.

The policy caused huge protests across the city. Angry people tore down cameras that watch for polluting cars. They painted graffiti and said the rules hurt their freedom. Some protesters even said the science about air pollution was wrong.

There is a silent majority who aren't keyboard warriors.
