Two Candidates Will Fight for California Governor Job
Xavier Becerra and Steve Hilton won the primary election and will compete in November.
California held an important election to choose who can run for governor. Sixty-one people wanted the job, but only two can move to the final election. Xavier Becerra and Steve Hilton got the most votes. They will compete again in November to see who becomes the next governor.
California uses a special voting system called a jungle primary. All candidates run together, no matter what political party they belong to. The two people with the most votes advance to the general election. This happened on June 2, but it took a week to count all the votes and announce the winners.
This governor's race cost more money than any other in history. People spent over $316 million on TV ads and other campaign materials. Tom Steyer, a very rich businessman, spent $200 million of his own money but still lost. Even with all that money, he came in third place behind Becerra and Hilton.
The new governor will have to solve many big problems in California. They will manage a huge budget of $4 trillion, which makes California's economy bigger than most countries. They also need to help with expensive housing, people without homes, and dangerous fires that happen every summer. This is one of the most important jobs in America.
The underdog stayed in the fight.
