High School Football Super 25: IMG Academy Finally Tested
Bishop Gorman beat Mater Dei for the first time ever, while IMG Academy survived a scary first half to stay unbeaten.
Bishop Gorman, ranked No. 10 in the country, traveled to face No. 9 Mater Dei in one of the biggest matchups of the week. The Gaels had never beaten Mater Dei before, so this was a historic chance. Bishop Gorman jumped to an early lead and never let go, winning 25-8 in dominant fashion. Junior running back Corey Hinton Jr. led the way with 210 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries. It was a statement win that made history for the Bishop Gorman program.
No. 2 IMG Academy faced its first real challenge of the season against The First Academy in Florida. The Ascenders fell behind 24-7 at halftime and had a lot of work to do. They responded in a huge way, scoring 27 points in the third quarter alone to flip the game around. By the final whistle, IMG Academy outscored their opponents 41-3 in the second half and won 48-27. The comeback proved that the Ascenders are tough and talented even when things go wrong.
In the Midwest, top teams had been taking turns losing each week, causing big changes in the rankings. This week finally brought some stability to that region. No. 18 Brownsburg from Indiana rolled past Fishers 49-10, running their winning streak to 24 straight games. Trinity from Kentucky bounced back from a tough loss the previous week by shutting out Male High School 34-0. It was a much calmer week for the Midwest's best programs.
No. 22 Massillon Washington from Ohio had the hardest test among the Midwest teams, facing an unbeaten St. Edward squad away from home. The Tigers held on for a close 23-21 victory in what turned out to be their tightest game of the season so far. Star player Gary Yeager had an outstanding night, rushing for 226 yards and two touchdowns. The win showed that Massillon Washington can compete in tough, pressure-filled situations. All three Midwest teams leaving the week with wins was a big deal for the region.
The Ascenders scored 27 points in the third quarter and would go on to outscore the Royals 41-3 in the second half as they rolled to a 48-27 to remain unbeaten.
