In football, the Jacobs Golden Eagles finished a suspended game against Prairie Ridge and won 35-20 on Saturday. Jacobs improved to a perfect 3-0 record on the season. Austin Stennett threw two touchdown passes and ran for a six-yard score, while Steve Shower hauled in a 76-yard touchdown reception. Libertyville also won, beating Warren 21-6 in the North Suburban conference.
Kankakee defeated Rich Township 29-14 in Southland football action. In a close nonconference game, Benet beat Leo 17-14. Leo's Robert Cunningham III caught a 71-yard touchdown pass, and Dontae Felder returned a fumble 15 yards for a score. Despite those big plays, Leo fell short and dropped to 2-1 on the year.
In boys soccer, St. Laurence stayed undefeated at 7-0 by beating Oak Park-River Forest 2-1. Mikey Bermudez and Jesus Salazar each scored for the Bulldogs. Indian Creek also stayed strong at 4-0-1, with Jason Brewer scoring three goals and adding an assist. Stevenson won the Glenbrook South Jim Wolter/Titan Invitational with a 2-0 championship win over Glenbard West.
At the Barrington Classic soccer tournament, Conant beat Lake Zurich 6-2 to take the championship. Waukegan won its match 2-0 over Timothy Christian to move to 1-4 on the season. Providence defeated Marian Catholic 3-0, with Jovanny Gonzalez scoring twice and adding an assist. Zion-Benton won the Wauconda Alonso Sanchez Memorial Invitational on penalty kicks.
In girls volleyball, Libertyville went undefeated at 13-0 after winning the Grayslake Central Ram Slam tournament championship. Elle Knight had nine kills and four blocks in the win over Carmel. At the Evergreen Park Invitational, St. Laurence beat Timothy Christian in the championship match. Tournament MVP Abby Ambrose led St. Laurence with seven kills and four digs.
On the local college football scene, Lake Forest College crushed Greenville 77-14 in its season opener. Quarterback Ethan Springer completed 20 of 26 passes for 360 yards and four touchdowns. North Central College also won its first game, beating Bethel 44-21 behind Garret Wilson's 325 passing yards and four touchdowns. Both teams are off to strong starts in their seasons.
St. Francis dropped to 0-2 after losing 58-6 to Indiana Wesleyan. Aurora University lost 44-7 to Wisconsin Platteville in its season opener. St. Xavier fell to Taylor 38-31, despite quarterback Blainey Dowling throwing for 449 yards and four touchdowns. Coen Demack caught 10 passes for 185 yards and three scores for St. Xavier.
