Harry and Meghan's Confusing Week in the UK

July 10, 2026 · BBC

Prince Harry's trip to promote the Invictus Games turned into a week full of problems, court losses, and missed chances.

Prince Harry traveled to the United Kingdom this week to promote the Invictus Games, a sports event for injured military veterans. His wife, Meghan, was expected to appear in public for the first time in nearly four years. Instead, the visit became a week of problems, mix-ups, and bad news. Things went wrong almost from the very start, leaving many people confused about what was really happening.

Before Harry even arrived, there was trouble. His team and Buckingham Palace got into a public argument over where Harry would be staying during his visit. It came out that Harry had already been told he could not stay at Buckingham Palace. That made the Palace look more reliable and left Harry's team on the back foot.

Things got even worse when Harry's court loss made headlines at the worst possible moment. Just as Harry stepped up to speak at his first Invictus Games event, news spread that he had lost his legal case against the publishers of the Daily Mail. The defeat was bigger than most people had expected. Harry's team quickly canceled plans for him to make a statement on camera that afternoon.

Meghan's absence added to the week's problems. A dispute over security had already kept her away from the start of Harry's trip. Many people hoped she would still show up later in the week, especially at a big Invictus event at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham. But the night before that event, it was announced that Meghan would not be appearing at any public events in the UK at all.

While Harry was struggling, his brother Prince William was having a much easier time. William made a smooth, trouble-free visit to the town of Hastings. People noticed the irony, since Hastings is famous for a battle in 1066 where a leader named William defeated a leader named Harold — which also happens to be Harry's full first name.

On Friday, there was one private bright spot. Harry, Meghan, and their two children, Archie and Lilibet, met privately with King Charles and Queen Camilla at Highgrove. The Palace confirmed the meeting but gave very few details. There were no photos from the get-together, so it did little to change the overall story of a difficult week.

Despite all the chaos, Harry's visit to the Invictus event in Birmingham showed a very different side of his trip. In a huge exhibition hall, Harry moved through the crowd with patience and warmth. He hugged people, joked around, posed for photos, and even tried out some of the sports. He also learned a new British Sign Language sign created specially for the Invictus Games.

Harry clearly has a deep bond with the Invictus community. These are veterans who have faced serious injuries and hardships, and Harry has worked with them for many years. They cheered for him, and he showed them real respect and care in return. It was a reminder of the good work the Games do, even if that message got lost in all the noise of the week.

In the end, Harry's visit left behind a feeling of missed chances. The Invictus Games deserved more attention, but the drama and confusion got in the way. Supporters of Harry and Meghan feel the media was unfair to them all week. Either way, the week showed how hard it can be for the couple to control their own story when they visit the UK.

Here was the Invictus community that is Prince Harry's "second family", people he has known and worked with for many years, a place of trust, where Harry was the hero.
