Growing Tech Company Uptick Picks Denver for Its North American Home Base
Uptick chose Denver over cities like San Diego and Austin because of lower costs, a well-educated workforce, and a central location.
A tech company called Uptick has chosen Denver, Colorado, as the home of its new North American headquarters. Uptick makes software that helps people manage fire protection systems. Company leaders said Denver stood out because office space there is affordable, the workforce is well-educated, and the city sits right in the middle of the country. Before picking Denver, the company looked at other cities, including San Diego and Austin, Texas.
Uptick's finance director, Tom Benians, said Denver's prices were a big reason the company moved there. He said office space in Denver can cost about one-third of what it costs in many other big cities. On top of the lower prices, many building owners in Denver are offering extra deals to attract new tenants. These deals include money to help companies set up and design their office spaces the way they want.
Denver's office market has also been getting stronger lately. In 2026, the number of empty office spaces stayed about the same, while the amount of new leases signed went up. According to the Denver Downtown Partnership, about 29% of office space in the city is currently vacant, and tenants have signed leases for about 1.35 million square feet of space so far this year. Experts say this year is on track to be the best year for Denver's office market since the COVID-19 pandemic.
Beyond cost, Uptick leaders said they were impressed by the people living and working in Denver. Danielle Worthman, Uptick's head of global marketing, pointed out that 51% of people in Denver have completed higher education, compared to about 30% across the country. That means Denver has a larger share of college-educated workers than most other American cities. Having access to skilled workers was just as important to the company as finding a good deal on office space.
Uptick also spent a lot of time finding just the right building. The company toured more than 50 different properties before making its choice. In the end, the team picked an office in a historic building called the Platte Street Rowing Club. Worthman said the team was looking for a space with natural light, exposed brick walls, and features that would make employees happy to come into work each day.
The move is part of a bigger plan for Uptick's future. The company says it hopes to double the size of its workforce by the end of 2027. For employees like Dani Richter, who switched careers from nursing to technology sales, having a real office to go to has made a positive difference. While many companies are still debating whether workers need a physical office, Uptick believes that investing in one now is the right move as it continues to grow.
"The hustle and bustle ... I'm starting to feel that here, and it's awesome."
