Google wants to release 32 million mosquitoes to help fight deadly disease

June 1, 2026 · The Independent

The tech company plans to use special mosquitoes to stop dangerous diseases like Zika and dengue fever.

A company owned by Google wants to release 32 million mosquitoes in California and Florida. These are special mosquitoes that could help fight dangerous diseases. The mosquitoes would help stop the spread of deadly viruses like Zika and dengue fever. The plan needs approval from the government before it can happen.

This might sound scary, but scientists have done this before. In 2022, a similar test in the Florida Keys worked well. Google's company, called Verily, also released one million mosquitoes in California in 2017. These tests have been successful in helping reduce disease.

The reason for these programs is very important. Mosquitoes kill more people than any other creature in the world. Each year, about 120 Americans die from West Nile virus, which mosquitoes spread. These tiny insects cause many serious health problems around the world.

However, some people worry about changing nature this way. Mosquitoes have been around since dinosaur times. They are food for birds and other animals that help our environment. Some people think we should not interfere with nature's balance.

The project targets a specific type of mosquito called Aedes aegypti, or Yellow Fever mosquito. These mosquitoes are not originally from America. They bite humans and can spread Zika, dengue, yellow fever, and chikungunya diseases. These are all very dangerous illnesses that can make people very sick.

The plan does not kill all mosquitoes. Instead, scientists release male mosquitoes that carry special bacteria called Wolbachia. These male mosquitoes do not bite people. When they mate with female mosquitoes, the eggs do not hatch.

Scientists believe removing these dangerous mosquitoes from cities would not hurt the environment much. These mosquitoes are not an important food source for other animals. The main result would be making areas safer from disease. The team promises to work with communities to make sure the plan is safe.

Climate change is making the mosquito problem worse. Warmer and more humid weather helps mosquitoes spread to new areas. Scientists have found that mosquitoes can adapt quickly to changing temperatures. This means disease risks might be higher than we think in the future.
