Google Hiring Hundreds of Engineers in Singapore as AI Boosts Demand for Tech Workers

Google's new Singapore Engineering Centre is growing fast, bringing AI researchers and software engineers together to build tech solutions for the region and the world.

Google is hiring a large number of engineers in Singapore, saying that artificial intelligence — or AI — is creating more demand for skilled tech workers, not less. The company officially opened its Google Cloud Singapore Engineering Centre on September 15, and it has already hired more than 85 specialists in less than six months. The centre brings together AI researchers, software engineers, and customer-facing engineers all under one roof. Google believes Singapore is one of the best places in the world to find strong tech talent.

The new engineering centre is located alongside Google DeepMind's Singapore AI research lab, which opened in November 2025. Google DeepMind is the part of the company that focuses on advanced AI research. Having both teams in the same place lets researchers and engineers work closely together to create solutions for businesses in Singapore and around the world. This kind of teamwork is a big part of why Google chose Singapore for this expansion.

Moe Abdula, a top Google Cloud leader for the Asia-Pacific region, said Singapore has a strong pool of talent at all career levels. He moved from the United States to Singapore three years ago and has been impressed by the quality of job applicants. 'Getting into Google is not easy,' he said. 'We've not compromised on the bar. We have a very rigid process that we go through, and we've been delighted by the availability of talent.'

Google's parent company, Alphabet, also grew its global workforce recently. It had 198,933 employees at the end of June 2026, up from 187,103 a year earlier. In Singapore alone, Google has more than 3,000 employees, and that number keeps growing. The Google Cloud part of the business has been growing especially fast, with its revenue rising 82 percent compared to the same time last year.

Not all of the new jobs are directly about building AI tools. Abdula said there is also strong demand for workers in areas like cybersecurity, data analytics, and general software engineering. As more companies start using AI in their daily work, they need more skilled people to help set it up and keep it running. This means the tech job market is expanding in many different directions at once.

Some of Google's engineers work directly with big companies to solve real problems. These workers, called forward-deployed engineers, or FDEs, spend weeks working side by side with clients to build solutions from start to finish. They need strong technical skills, but they also need to understand what a business really needs and how to help it grow. Abdula said engineers who can do more than just write code will have a clear advantage in the job market.

One example of this work is a project Google did with Grab, the popular ride-hailing and food delivery app used across Southeast Asia. Grab handles more than 10 million voice calls every month through its app, and language barriers between drivers and passengers were a big problem. Google engineers built a translation system that can handle different dialects, accents, and even the tone of a conversation. The system responds fast enough to keep conversations natural and help reduce misunderstandings.

In another project, Google's DeepMind team helped Grab improve its weather predictions for food delivery riders. The new system can predict rain, humidity, and wind at a very detailed level — down to small areas and short time windows. This helps Grab tell riders when to head out or take a break to avoid getting caught in bad weather. Better predictions mean faster deliveries and fewer delays for customers.

The Singapore Engineering Centre has also attracted some Singaporean Google employees to move back home. Software engineer Chris Chen, 29, returned after more than three years working at Google's office in London, and now builds private network systems for large business clients. Another engineer, Zhang Xinyi, 26, started as an intern at Google Taiwan before returning to Singapore when the new centre opened. She said Singapore's location and time zone make it easy to work with companies across the entire Asia-Pacific region.

Even though AI can now write about 70 percent of Google's code on its own, Abdula does not think AI will take away software engineering jobs. Instead, he sees AI as a tool that makes engineers faster and more productive, handling boring tasks so humans can focus on more creative work. He is so confident about the future of coding that he advised three of his own nephews and nieces to study software engineering. He also said that even if AI model development slows down for safety reasons, the Singapore Engineering Centre's work will continue, because a powerful AI model alone is not enough to help a real business run safely and reliably.
