CBS News Radio Ends After Almost 100 Years of Broadcasting

May 25, 2026 · The Independent

The famous radio service that brought news to 700 stations across America will stop forever on Friday night.

CBS News Radio will stop broadcasting forever on Friday night after almost 100 years on the air. The radio service has been bringing news to about 700 radio stations across the United States since 1927. The company is closing the radio service because it costs too much money to keep running. This marks the end of one of America's oldest and most important news services.

CBS News Radio first started in September 1927 and became a very important part of American media. The service created many famous news shows, including the World News Roundup, which was the longest-running newscast in the country. Company leaders said the radio service was the foundation for everything CBS News built over the years. They had to shut it down because of money problems and tough business conditions.

The network helped bring major historical events directly into American homes for almost a century. Famous news reporters like Walter Cronkite, Edward R. Murrow, and Douglas Edwards worked for CBS News Radio. These reporters covered important events like World War II, the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, and the September 11 attacks. They helped Americans understand what was happening in the world during some of the most important moments in history.

Former CBS News anchor Dan Rather said the network was like a national institution that helped hold the country together. Steve Kathan, who hosted the World News Roundup for many years, said losing the service was like losing an important American institution. The final broadcast used Edward R. Murrow's famous phrase 'Good night, and good luck' to say goodbye.

The shutdown of CBS News Radio is part of bigger changes happening at the network. On Thursday night, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert also aired its final episode after 11 years on television. CBS canceled the late-night show for similar money reasons, though some people think it was because Colbert often criticized Donald Trump. These changes are happening as CBS's parent company is merging with another media company called Skydance Media.

It, for many, many years, was a part, and I would argue not a small part, of what held the country together.
