Get Jiro to Below: Seven Great Shows to Stream This Week

October 2, 2026 · The Guardian

From a sushi master's bloody revenge to a creepy sea monster, this week's streaming picks have something for everyone.

This week, streaming services are packed with exciting new shows and movies. Whether you love animated adventures, scary sea creature mysteries, stunning nature films, or reality baking competitions, there is something for you. From HBO Max to Netflix to Disney+, here are seven of the best things to watch starting this week.

Get Jiro, arriving on HBO Max on Sunday, October 4, is an animated show based on a graphic novel created by the late food writer Anthony Bourdain and co-writer Joel Rose. The story takes place in a future version of Los Angeles where food is one of the only real pleasures left, and chefs are treated like celebrities. The main character, Jiro, is a skilled sushi master who gets into serious trouble with dangerous gangsters and must fight to stay alive. The show mixes wild, over-the-top action with a deep love of food culture, including one unforgettable scene where a villain meets his end thanks to hollandaise sauce. The plot can feel a little silly at times, but fans of Bourdain's passion for food will find plenty to enjoy.

Below lands on Netflix on Thursday, October 8, and it is a suspenseful horror drama set in a small, struggling fishing community in Newfoundland, Canada. Actor Josh Hartnett plays Calvin Penney, a fisherman who is still haunted by the accident that took his father's life. Strange and terrifying events begin to unfold — a severed leg rises from the ocean, and a massive iceberg drifts into the harbor — leaving everyone wondering what is really going on. The show blends local legends and real concerns about climate change, keeping viewers guessing right up to the end.

Africa: Earth's Wild Home is streaming now on Disney+, taking viewers deep into the breathtaking landscapes and wildlife of the African continent. Like many nature shows, it gives animals human-like feelings, but it takes that approach further than most — at one point imagining a dating profile for a rare black rain frog. When those moments feel too cute, the stunning footage more than makes up for it, including a tense cheetah hunt and a lone hyena facing thousands of flamingos.

Marshals arrives on Paramount+ on Monday, October 5, as a spinoff of the popular Western drama Yellowstone, following the character Kayce Dutton, played by Luke Grimes. Kayce is taken away from his home ranch and thrown into a dangerous situation when a land dispute turns into a hostage crisis with his son Tate's life on the line. The show sticks to its tried-and-true formula of cowboys, quiet stares, and sudden bursts of action. It may not be the most original story, but it commits fully to its world and characters.

Carrie debuts on Prime Video on Wednesday, October 7, as a brand-new TV adaptation of Stephen King's famous story about a shy, bullied teenage girl who discovers she has telekinetic abilities — meaning she can move objects with her mind. Directed by Mike Flanagan with King's own approval, the show updates the story for today's world, making social media a key part of how Carrie is mocked and excluded. Actress Summer H. Howell plays Carrie as a sympathetic and awkward young girl, and when the bullying gets to be too much, she finds a shocking way to fight back.

Is It Cake? Halloween drops on Netflix on Friday, October 9, and it is one of the most ridiculous — and fun — shows on television. Host Mikey Day, dressed in a skeleton costume, challenges incredibly talented bakers to create food that looks exactly like real objects. The three-part special features judges including children's TV star Blippi, comedian Kristen Schaal, WWE champion Bianca Belair, and actor Cedric Yarbrough. It is silly, surprising, and a whole lot of fun.

Until the Last Heartbeat premieres on Channel 4 on Friday, October 9, and it is an Italian drama that asks a very tough question: how far would you go to save your child's life? The show follows Diego Mancini, a talented heart surgeon played by Marco Bocci, who faces an impossible situation when his son becomes seriously ill at the same time a powerful mafia boss arrives as his patient. Diego is torn between his medical duty and his love for his family, and the show tests the limits of right and wrong throughout. It can feel a little overdramatic at times, but the emotional pull of the story makes it gripping from start to finish.

Bourdain's love of food as a sensory delight is greedily indulged.
