Germany's Leader Travels to Kyiv to Show Support for Ukraine

October 4, 2026 · France 24

Chancellor Friedrich Merz made a surprise visit to Ukraine's capital as Russia steps up drone and missile attacks on the city.

Germany's Chancellor Friedrich Merz made a surprise visit to Kyiv, Ukraine's capital, on Sunday. He went to show his support for President Volodymyr Zelensky as Russia continues to attack the country. Russia has been sending waves of drones and missiles at the city, hitting bridges, power plants, and other key infrastructure. Merz said Ukraine needed his visit because the situation is becoming more serious every week.

Merz did not tell the public about his trip before he left, which is common for leaders visiting war zones. When he arrived, he was met at the train station by Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga. Germany's Economy Minister Katherina Reiche also joined Merz on the trip. Sybiga said the two countries have built a 'strong strategic partnership' and plan to make it even stronger.

In a statement after he arrived, Merz explained why he made the journey. He said, 'I travelled to Kyiv today because Ukraine needs all our support in the coming weeks.' He also gave a strong warning about what could happen if Russia is not stopped. 'If Russia is not stopped, its war machine will sooner or later turn against us,' he said.

Russia's attacks on Kyiv have gotten worse in recent weeks. Drones and missiles have struck several bridges over the Dnipro River, which runs through the middle of the city, causing huge traffic jams. The attacks have also hit energy plants that provide power and heating, which is especially worrying as winter gets closer. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the city is in a 'very dramatic situation.'

The day before Merz arrived, Russia's government warned all foreigners and diplomats to leave Kyiv right away. It said a 'massive' wave of new airstrikes was coming and that anyone who stayed did so at their own risk. However, leaders from countries that support Ukraine have ignored similar warnings before. Russia made the same kind of threat back in May, but foreign officials kept visiting anyway.

Germany is one of the countries that gives Ukraine the most help during the war. Merz told Zelensky directly, 'You can continue to count on our help.' The two leaders also talked about ways for German and Ukrainian companies to cooperate. Earlier that week, Merz had urged NATO and European countries to stand united as Ukraine faces growing danger from Russia.

"If Russia is not stopped, its war machine will sooner or later turn against us."
