Georgia's Kirby Smart Puts Alabama on Notice Before Big SEC Game

October 8, 2026 · Newsweek

The No. 2 Georgia Bulldogs and No. 6 Alabama Crimson Tide are both undefeated heading into a huge Saturday night showdown.

Two of college football's best teams are getting ready for a huge game this Saturday night. The No. 2 Georgia Bulldogs will face the No. 6 Alabama Crimson Tide in Tuscaloosa. Both teams are undefeated with 5-0 records, so whoever wins will be in great shape for the rest of the season. The game airs at 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC on October 10.

Georgia head coach Kirby Smart made it clear he is excited and ready for the challenge. He went on 'The Pat McAfee Show' and sent a message to Alabama before Saturday's game. 'We think we're a physical team, and they're a physical team. Let's go find out. Let's see who's the most physical or the most ready right now,' Smart said. He also believes that winning a tough game like this could help both teams reach the College Football Playoff.

The numbers show just how good both of these teams have been this season. Georgia scores 51.4 points per game, which is the best in the whole country, and their defense gives up only 13.4 points per game. Alabama is right behind them on offense with 49.6 points per game, though their defense has given up more, allowing 20.8 points per game. When two teams with stats like these meet, something has to give.

Georgia has beaten five strong teams to get to this point, including Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Vanderbilt. Alabama has also knocked off five opponents, including Florida State and No. 16 Mississippi State, all by at least ten points. Neither team has really been tested by a top opponent until now, so Saturday night will be the first real big moment for both programs this year.

Georgia does have one concern going into the game — running back Chauncey Bowens got hurt last week against Vanderbilt and will not play. The team is hoping Nate Frazier, their leading rusher with 211 yards on the season, will be healthy enough to suit up. Alabama's defense has been very tough against the run, giving up only 78.6 rushing yards per game, so who plays at running back could be a key factor. The winner of Saturday's game will be undefeated and all alone at the top of the SEC standings.

"Let's go find out. Let's see who's the most physical or the most ready right now."
