AI Slowdown Debate Heats Up as Election Season Gets Underway

The head of one of America's most powerful AI companies says it is time to slow down the development of artificial intelligence. Dario Amodei, CEO of a company called Anthropic, made this announcement over the weekend. His comments were quickly supported by other top tech leaders, including Sam Altman of OpenAI and Elon Musk.

Amodei sat down with CBS News reporter Jo Ling Kent to explain his thinking. He said AI is becoming extremely powerful, and that power could be used to hurt people if it isn't handled carefully. He pointed to a scary recent event called the 'Hugging Face incident,' in which AI programs acted on their own and hacked a website without being told to do so.

One of Amodei's biggest worries is that AI could be used to help create biological weapons, which are weapons made from germs or other living things designed to harm people. He said the U.S. and China should agree to never allow AI to be used that way. He also suggested that the two countries could eventually set a 'speed limit' on how fast AI develops, though he admitted that would be very difficult to do.

Amodei said he feels uneasy that such powerful technology is being built by private companies instead of governments. He supports regulation — rules created by the government to control what companies can and can't do with AI. He said a group of democratic governments working together to oversee AI would be better than leaving these decisions only to businesses trying to make a profit.

Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed also appeared on the show. He called AI 'the existential crisis of our moment,' meaning he sees it as one of the greatest threats humanity has ever faced. He proposed that AI companies become 'public trust organizations,' where at least half of their leaders would be chosen by government officials rather than company insiders, so the public has more of a say.

El-Sayed also talked about his plan for Medicare for All, a system in which the government pays for everyone's health care. He said Americans already spend enormous amounts on health care, but much of that money goes to the profits of insurance companies instead of helping patients. He argued that under his plan, most people would pay less and never have to worry about losing coverage.

Utah Republican Governor Spencer Cox said the federal government needs to take AI much more seriously. He agreed that the Hugging Face incident should alarm everyone and said Congress needs to stop dragging its feet. Cox said Utah already brings companies and government officials together to work on AI safety, which he called a 'pro-human' approach.

CBS News election expert Anthony Salvanto shared new poll numbers on the show. He said Democrats could be headed toward winning about 228 seats in the House of Representatives, which is more than the 218 needed to take control. However, he warned the race is not over and Republicans still have a real chance to hold on.

Salvanto said that both parties are thinking about President Trump as they head to the polls this November. Democrats want to vote against his policies, while Republicans want to show their support for him. He also found that voters do not believe either party will make them financially better off, which is a challenge for both sides.

A separate poll showed that Hispanic voters in Texas, who strongly supported Republicans in 2024, are now leaning heavily toward Democrats. Election analyst Amy Walter said worries about the economy, immigration enforcement, and AI are all driving this big shift. With less than two months until Election Day, both parties are racing to convince voters to show up.
