America at 250: Immigration, Space, and Sports Take Center Stage

July 5, 2026 · CBS News

On America's 250th birthday weekend, a TV news show explored what makes the country unique — from immigrant stories to moon missions to college athletics.

On July 5, 2026, the TV news show 'Face the Nation' aired a special program to honor America's 250th birthday. Host Ed O'Keefe spoke with lawmakers, the NASA chief, the head of college sports, and a former health official. The show looked at three big topics: immigration, space, and college athletics. It came just one day after huge celebrations across the country.

Two members of Congress — Republican Carlos Gimenez of Florida and Democrat Adriano Espaillat of New York — shared their stories of coming to the U.S. as young children. Gimenez fled Cuba at age 7, and Espaillat came from the Dominican Republic at age 9. Both said they did not speak English when they arrived but slowly built new lives. They agreed that immigration has always made America stronger.

The two lawmakers also discussed a Supreme Court ruling that could force about 356,000 people from Haiti and Venezuela to leave the U.S. by ending their Temporary Protected Status. Gimenez said sending people back to Haiti, a country in crisis, would be a serious mistake. Espaillat called for protecting Dreamers, farmworkers, and families from being separated. Both said Congress needs to work across party lines to fix the immigration system.

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said the U.S. is in a real space race with China and the gap is measured in months, not years. He said America plans to land astronauts on the moon by the end of 2028, while China is aiming for 2029. He described a plan to begin building a moon base starting in 2027, with crews living there full-time by the early 2030s. The goal is to use the moon as a stepping stone to Mars.

NCAA President Charlie Baker talked about major changes in college sports that now allow athletes to earn money through deals based on their name, image, and likeness. He supports a proposed national law to set fair rules for all schools. He also said that even as some sports programs get cut, the total number of college athletes is near an all-time high. He said football and basketball earnings help pay for many of the smaller sports.

Former CDC official Dr. Debra Houry said the health agency faced serious problems after the new administration took office in 2025. Hundreds of health websites were taken down, scientists were left out of key decisions, and about 30 percent of the workforce was cut. She said political leaders with no medical background were making health decisions without input from doctors or scientists. She warned that public trust in the CDC has dropped more than 20 points in recent polls.

There's been no period in American history that has not been pushed by immigration forward.
