Many pet owners wait until they can see signs of aging before changing their pet's diet, but Henstridge says that is often too late. "We want proactive healthy ageing and we can use nutrition to help do that — because when we finally start to see signs of ageing in our pets, it's already been happening for a long time." Acting early gives pets a better chance of staying healthy longer.
Cats begin to change inside their bodies around age seven, even if they still look and act young. Dogs age differently depending on their size — smaller breeds age more slowly, while larger breeds age faster. In general, a pet is considered "senior" during the last third of its expected life, and that is a good time to switch to a diet made for older animals.
