From Gallery Fun to Live Theatre: Arts Activities for Kids This August

August 20, 2026 · The Straits Times

Seven family-friendly arts events in Singapore offer children chances to dance, paint, print, and perform their way through the school holidays.

This August, families in Singapore have seven exciting arts activities to choose from, ranging from printmaking workshops to live theatre shows. These events give children aged three to twelve a chance to build creativity, confidence, and problem-solving skills while having fun. Many of the activities are designed for beginners, so no experience is needed. Whether your child loves dancing, painting, or watching a good story come to life on stage, there is something here for everyone.

Arts activities do more than just keep kids busy. When children take part in theatre, dance, or visual art, they develop important life skills like communication, empathy, and teamwork. Families also get to bond and make lasting memories together while exploring these creative spaces.

One popular option is the Introduction to Relief Printmaking Workshop, run by Arterly Obsessed. In this two-hour class, participants design, carve, and print their own rubber stamps, then use them to decorate a canvas tote bag. The session is great for beginners and also encourages kids to swap stamps with each other, building friendship along the way. It runs until August 31 and costs from $60.

If your child prefers digital art, the Digital Art Painting with Procreate Workshop by DoodleBit SG could be a great fit. Using an iPad and Apple Pencil, children design and illustrate their very own custom stickers, guided step by step by an experienced teacher. When the class is done, the stickers are printed, cut, and shipped right to the participant's home as a special keepsake. This workshop runs until October 31 and starts from $90.

For younger children aged three to six, the Esplanade is staging PLAYtime! 2026 The Amazing Sarong until August 30. The interactive play follows siblings Nora and Adi as they use their mother's sarong to create secret hideouts, costumes, and imaginary sails. It is based on a popular children's book and teaches kids to care for others' feelings and connect with their cultural identity. Shows run on weekdays and weekends at different times, and tickets cost $23.

Older kids and families will enjoy Chicken Little, a musical presented by the Singapore Repertory Theatre. In this funny and heartfelt show, Chicken Little tries to warn the King that the sky is falling, but first she must find the courage to speak up. Along the way, she meets colourful characters like Cocky Locky, Ducky Daddles, and the sneaky Foxy Loxy. The show runs until August 30 at the Drama Centre Theatre, with tickets starting from $22.

Families looking for a free option can visit the Keppel Centre for Art Education at the National Gallery Singapore. This space is designed for children aged four to twelve and features interactive learning zones that explore nature, sustainability, and creativity. Visitors can also catch the free children's exhibition When Art Meets Nature, which runs until November 1 and includes a stunning installation called Peace Forest by Singaporean artist Soh Ee Shaun. On weekends, wait times may be around 30 minutes or more, so plan ahead.

Children who love to move will find a great home at the O School Junior Programme. This ongoing hip hop dance programme is open to kids aged five to twelve and helps them build coordination, rhythm, and confidence through movement and choreography. Students can start at a beginner level and work their way up to intermediate and advanced classes at their own pace. Eight lessons start from $280.

Finally, the Art of Brush workshop by Singapore Century Calligraphy introduces children to the beautiful tradition of Chinese ink painting. Over 90 minutes, participants learn brush techniques and explore the history of the Chinese zodiac and the personality traits linked to each zodiac animal. Calm spaces are available to help every child feel comfortable throughout the session. The workshop runs until August 31 at Waterloo Centre and costs from $100.

Many of these events are eligible for the $100 SG Culture Pass, Singapore's national arts and culture voucher. For more family-friendly arts events, visit Catch.sg, Singapore's national platform for arts and culture news.

Bravery isn't about being fearless — it's about speaking up even when it feels scary.
