France Ready to Fight Spain for Midfield Control in World Cup Semi-Final

July 13, 2026 · Reuters

Coach Didier Deschamps says France will not just sit back and defend — they plan to win the ball and control the game against Spain.

France and Spain will meet on Tuesday in a World Cup semi-final that could come down to who controls the middle of the field. France coach Didier Deschamps said his team will not just defend and wait — they will fight for the ball. Spain have been one of the best teams at keeping possession in this tournament, but France believe they have what it takes to match them.

Spain have reached the semi-finals by dominating the ball and pressing their opponents far back into their own half. They move the ball quickly from side to side, which tires out the other team and opens up spaces to score. France have fast players who can hurt Spain on the counter-attack, but Deschamps made it clear his team wants more than just quick breaks.

"Spain can apply a lot of pressure, but we are also a team who need the ball," Deschamps told reporters on Monday. "There will be a battle for control." French midfielder Warren Zaire-Emery agreed, saying France have several ways to play the game. "We have the qualities to attack quickly on the counter, to keep possession ourselves and to defend well," he said. He added that how the game unfolds will decide which approach France use.

France got good news before the match when midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni was cleared to play. Tchouameni, who plays for Real Madrid, had missed France's last two games with a hamstring injury. His last appearance was in a 3-0 win over Sweden on June 30, so he has been out for about two weeks. Deschamps said he is not fully fit yet, but healthy enough to be picked. "He is better today, although we cannot say he is 100% recovered," the coach said.

Having Tchouameni back is a big deal for France's midfield. He is a holding midfielder, which means his job is to sit in front of the defense, win the ball back, and help his team play through pressure. Without him, France used Manu Kone and Adrien Rabiot together in the middle, and young Zaire-Emery is also an option. Deschamps could keep any of these players in the lineup, but Tchouameni's return gives him more choices. Whoever starts will need to work hard to stop Spain from settling into their rhythm.

Fullback Jules Kounde said France will need to hold the ball themselves if they want to disrupt Spain's style. Spain's way of playing is built to exhaust opponents — they keep possession for long stretches, forcing the other team to chase and tire out. France know they cannot just defend the whole game and hope for a lucky break. Deschamps said his team's experience in big tournaments will help them handle the tough moments ahead.

Spain beat France twice in recent competitions — once in the Euro 2024 semi-finals and again in the Nations League in 2025. But Deschamps said those results do not matter much now. "The players are different now and they are not necessarily at the same level of form," he said. He made clear that the only game on his mind is Tuesday's match in Dallas.

Deschamps also spoke about how important it is to adapt during a long tournament. A coach must be willing to change the game plan depending on the opponent and the situation. "Football is not an exact science, but preparation and planning are always important, right down to the smallest detail," he said. France are trying to reach their third World Cup final in a row, which would be a remarkable achievement. Star forward Kylian Mbappe, the tournament's top scorer, is dealing with a minor ankle injury but is expected to play a key role.

"Spain can apply a lot of pressure, but we are also a team who need the ball. There will be a battle for control."
