Four Grayson Players Suspended After Fight with Miami Carol City

October 6, 2026 · CBS News

Athletic associations in Georgia and Florida are still investigating the postgame brawl and warn that more punishments could follow.

Four football players from Grayson High School in Georgia have been suspended after a fight broke out following a game against Miami Carol City last Friday night. The Georgia High School Association, known as the GHSA, reviewed the incident and gave each player a one-game suspension. Because of the punishment, the four players will miss Friday's game against crosstown rival Archer. Athletic groups in both Georgia and Florida say their investigations are still going on and that more punishments could be handed down.

The fight happened after Grayson beat Carol City 10-9 in a close, low-scoring game. In a joint statement, the GHSA and the Florida High School Athletic Association — called the FHSAA — described the players' behavior as 'unacceptable.' They said it did not represent the values that high school sports are supposed to stand for. Both groups made it clear that they have a zero-tolerance policy toward any kind of fighting or brawling at athletic events.

The associations said that fights at games put many people in danger, including players, coaches, referees, and fans in the stands. They also reminded student-athletes that playing high school sports comes with important responsibilities. Those responsibilities include showing respect for others, keeping self-control, and displaying good sportsmanship at all times. Officials stressed that these rules apply before, during, and after a game.

GHSA Executive Director Tim Scott said it was hard to figure out exactly who was involved in the fight. He explained that the altercation happened after the final whistle and that no available video showed the whole field at once. 'The final whistle ends the competition, but the responsibility to demonstrate good sportsmanship does not end with it,' Scott said. He noted that GHSA rules require players and coaches to behave well even after officials no longer have control over the game. The names of the four suspended Grayson players were not made public.

Before the postgame trouble, the two teams played a tight defensive battle on the field. Grayson's Deuce Smith threw a touchdown pass to Joey Hunter in the first quarter, and Ricardo Martinez kicked the extra point to give Grayson a 7-0 lead. Martinez added a field goal before halftime to push the score to 10-0. Carol City scored a touchdown in the second half but missed the extra point, and they later added a field goal to make it 10-9. Grayson held on to win, but the celebration that followed turned ugly.

With the win, Grayson moved to a 3-3 record on the season. They will now open Region 4-7A play against Archer at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Archer High School. Archer enters that matchup with a 4-2 record, so it promises to be another competitive game. Meanwhile, both the GHSA and the FHSAA continue to look into the incident and say additional action could still be taken against players, coaches, or schools found to have broken their rules.

"The final whistle ends the competition, but the responsibility to demonstrate good sportsmanship does not end with it."
