Former Chef Will Admit to Helping People End Their Lives

May 27, 2026 · CBS News

Kenneth Law is expected to plead guilty to charges related to shipping deadly poison to people around the world.

A man from Canada is expected to admit in court on Friday that he helped people end their lives. Kenneth Law, age 60, is a former chef who shipped deadly poison to people around the world. He ran websites that gave advice to young people who were thinking about suicide. Police say he sent packages with a dangerous chemical to hundreds of people in many countries.

Law will plead guilty to 14 charges of helping people commit suicide in Canada. However, the more serious murder charges against him are being dropped. This has made many families very angry because they believe Law should face murder charges for what he did. The chemical Law sent is called sodium nitrite, which is normally used to preserve food but can kill people.

Police in Britain found that 232 people in their country bought products from Law's websites over two years. Of those people, 88 had died by April 2023. This shows how dangerous Law's actions were across many countries. Canadian police warned people to watch out for packages labeled with sodium nitrite.

Kim Prosser lost her son Ashtyn in March 2023, just weeks before Law was arrested. She will attend the court hearing on Friday and said it will be the start of healing. Another father, David Parfett from Britain, lost his son Thomas and believes Law should be charged with murder. He thinks Law gave detailed instructions that led to deaths, not just advice.

A law professor explained why prosecutors are having trouble with murder charges under Canadian law. It's not clear if helping someone commit suicide is the same crime as murder. Because prosecutors weren't sure they could prove murder, they focused on charges they could prove. Law could still go to prison for 10 to 20 years and might face charges in other countries too.

If Law hadn't been offering detailed instructions about how to take your own life, then the chances are my son would still be here.
