Five Things to Look Forward to as F1 Returns After Summer Break

August 22, 2026 · The Independent

Formula 1 racing is back, and the second half of the season has plenty of drama, new tracks, and title battles in store.

Formula 1 racing is back after its summer break, and the Dutch Grand Prix is the first stop. Nineteen-year-old Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes leads the championship by 50 points. He has won six races already and is chasing history as the sport's youngest-ever world champion. His teammate George Russell had a rough start to the season, but he showed improvement by earning pole position for the sprint race.

Zandvoort is hosting an F1 race for the very last time this weekend. The track is an old-school circuit surrounded by sand dunes near the North Sea. It chose not to renew its contract with F1 beyond this year. Fans are coming out to give the beloved venue a proper send-off.

One of the biggest questions for the rest of the season is whether Russell can catch Antonelli. Antonelli leads his teammate by 59 points right now. But there are more than 300 points left to be won, so the gap can close quickly. Last year, Oscar Piastri lost a 34-point lead after this very race, which shows how fast things can change.

Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari are another team to watch closely. Hamilton is a seven-time world champion, but he and Ferrari have missed chances in the last two races at Spa and Budapest. If he can win a few races in a row, the fight for the title could get very interesting. Many fans dream of seeing Hamilton win a record eighth championship.

F1 is heading to a brand-new city for the first time in three years. Madrid, Spain, will host a street circuit race on September 13. The track has 22 turns, and a special banked corner called 'La Monumental' is expected to be one of the most exciting parts of the circuit. It will be a big moment for one of Europe's greatest cities.

Aston Martin has had a very tough season so far. Drivers Fernando Alonso, now 45, and Lance Stroll have faced health scares and poor results. The team's engine deal with Honda has also caused big problems. Fans and team members are hoping that famous car designer Adrian Newey can bring new ideas and get the team back on track.

There is also a chance the F1 season could end in Europe for the first time in about 30 years. The final two races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi may be cancelled because of unrest in the Middle East. F1 chief Stefano Domenicali has said the season would then finish at a European track. Imola, in Italy — Antonelli's home circuit — seems like the top choice, which would make for an incredible end to the year.

A season finale in the rain/snow? Yes, please.
