Firefly Aerospace Set to Receive $110 Million Government Loan

June 24, 2026 · Reuters

A U.S. government bank is expected to approve a major loan to help a Texas rocket company grow and compete with space firms around the world.

A Texas rocket and spacecraft company called Firefly Aerospace is expected to receive a $110 million loan from a U.S. government bank. The loan would come from the Export-Import Bank of the United States, also known as EXIM. The bank's three board members were set to vote on the loan on a Tuesday morning. If approved, the money would help Firefly build bigger facilities in Texas to make more spacecraft. The news came from a document reviewed by the Reuters news agency.

The loan is part of a special EXIM program called the 'Make More in America Initiative.' This program is designed to help U.S. companies compete against foreign companies in areas like space technology and artificial intelligence. The Trump administration created this effort to make American businesses stronger in the global market. Part of the plan includes programs meant to attract foreign buyers to high-tech U.S. products.

Firefly is based in Austin, Texas, and has made a big name for itself in the space industry. Last year, it became the first private company to successfully land a spacecraft on the moon. The spacecraft, called Blue Ghost, flew to the moon without any crew on board. Firefly also launches satellites into orbit using its rocket called Alpha, and it builds special satellite platforms that can carry out many different missions in space.

The $110 million loan would be available for 12 months, and Firefly would have 10 years to pay it back. A person who knew the details of the loan said that Firefly's expansion in Texas is expected to create about 200 new jobs. That person asked not to be named because the loan details had not been made public yet. Firefly did not respond to a request for comment from reporters.

Satellites and spacecraft are a big area of competition between countries and companies right now. China's space industry has been growing very fast and is trying to win customers from other countries. Many countries in Europe also want to own their own space systems, which have proven very useful during conflicts and for everyday communication like internet and phone service.

Several big companies are competing in the global space race. Elon Musk's SpaceX makes a large number of satellites quickly and at a lower cost, which has changed the way the industry works. Other U.S. companies like Blue Origin, founded by Jeff Bezos, and Rocket Lab have also moved into spacecraft production. Firefly is hoping this new loan will help it keep up and grow alongside these other major players.

Firefly last year became the first private company to successfully land a spacecraft on the moon with its uncrewed Blue Ghost.
