Family of eight, including six kids, found in burning house in Michigan identified

A family of eight was found dead inside a burning home in Grand Haven Township, Michigan, on Friday. The victims are Mandy Karolkiewicz, 39, her husband Kris Karolkiewicz, 47, and their six children ages 5 to 15. Relatives confirmed who the family members were. Authorities are looking into the deaths as a possible murder-suicide, though no official cause of death has been announced yet.

When firefighters put out the blaze, they found the family inside the home. Ottawa County Sheriff's Captain Jake Sparks said some family members had gunshot wounds. The post called her a 'Premier Substitute Teacher' at Peach Plains Elementary School. It praised her for going above and beyond for students, especially when they were having a hard day.

The school's post said Mandy responded to struggling students with empathy, patience, and care. Empathy means the ability to understand and share how someone else feels. Her coworkers said she poured her heart into her work and helped make the school a better place. Many in the community remembered her as a devoted and caring teacher.

After news of the tragedy spread, the school district said it would offer grief support to the community. Superintendent Kristen Perkowski wrote in a letter that it was 'a devastating incident and a tragic loss.' She said many people might be struggling to process the news. Grief support resources were made available to students, families, and staff.

Mandy's older sister, Molly Cessna, confirmed the deaths on Facebook. She wrote, 'My little sister Mandy, her husband, and my six nieces and nephews. Everything's just blurry.' She asked friends to keep praying as the family tried to make sense of what happened. She also added, 'Our hearts are utterly shattered. Tragic doesn't even touch it.'

Mandy's stepfather said he and his wife were waiting for autopsy results before sharing more information. He and Mandy's mother posted a family photo online and wrote, 'So grateful for the joy they brought into our life. We are just so shattered.'
