Falcons Update on Michael Penix Jr. Isn't Promising for Bears Game
Atlanta's starting quarterback hurt his ribs against Baltimore, and the team isn't sure he'll be ready to play in Week 6.
Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. hurt his ribs during Sunday night's game against the Baltimore Ravens. He was tackled hard by Ravens linebacker Tavius Robinson with just 27 seconds left in a tied game. The injury kept him out of overtime, and Atlanta ended up losing. Now the Falcons aren't sure if Penix will be healthy enough to start in Week 6 against the Chicago Bears.
The game was tied 23-23 when Penix got hurt. Atlanta punted the ball, and when overtime began, Penix stayed on the sideline. Backup quarterback Tua Tagovailoa took his place but threw an interception on his second pass, ending Atlanta's chances. The Ravens scored a touchdown on their first drive and won the game.
NFL reporter Adam Schefter said the injury does not appear to be serious. He posted on X that Penix 'might be able to return for Sunday's game vs. the Bears,' but added that the team wants to be careful. The Falcons plan to watch how Penix practices during the week before making a final decision. Even if he does play, he may not be at his best.
Penix missed the first two games of the season while dealing with a personal challenge. During that time, Cooper Rush started at quarterback, and the Falcons lost both games. Backup Tagovailoa was also hurt with an oblique injury during that stretch. Making things worse, Atlanta didn't get a single offensive play inside the red zone during those first two games.
Once Penix returned in Week 3, things got better fast. He helped lead the Falcons to two wins in a row. So far this season, he has thrown for 719 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception. The Atlanta offense has looked much stronger with the 2024 first-round draft pick playing.
The loss to Baltimore dropped the Falcons to a 2-3 record. They would have a much better chance of beating the 3-2 Bears if Penix is healthy and playing. However, the team doesn't want to risk making his injury worse by rushing him back too soon. It's a tough decision the coaching staff will have to make by the end of the week.
The Bears have their own quarterback questions heading into Week 6. Chicago's Caleb Williams has missed the last three games with a Grade 2 hamstring strain he suffered in Week 2. He is also working to prove he is healthy enough to start this Sunday. Both teams are hoping their starting quarterbacks will be ready to go when they face each other.
Penix might be able to return for Sunday's game vs. the Bears, but the team wants to be cautious and see him practice this week before it knows whether he will be able to play in Week 6.
