Extreme Heat Is Coming to Boston This Week — Some Towns Could See a 5-Day Heat Wave

July 12, 2026 · CBS News

Temperatures could climb to 105 degrees with humidity, and forecasters are warning people to stay cool and hydrated.

The Boston area is heading into a very hot week, with temperatures expected to soar into the mid to upper 90s by Tuesday and Wednesday. Weather forecasters say the heat, combined with high humidity, could make it feel like 95 to 105 degrees outside. Some towns in the region may even experience a five-day heat wave. Meteorologist Sarah Wroblewski of WBZ-TV is urging people to take the heat seriously and stay safe.

The weekend before was pleasant, with dry air and comfortable temperatures only reaching the upper 70s in Boston. Inland areas hit the 80s, but the air was dry and it did not feel too bad. That is about to change as a shift in wind patterns brings heat and humidity into the region.

Monday will start off feeling comfortable, but temperatures will quickly rise into the 80s by the afternoon, getting close to 90 degrees in some spots. A weak weather disturbance passing through northern New England could bring a brief shower on Monday, but it will not stop the heat from building. The south coast, Cape Cod, and the Islands may stay a little cooler because of winds blowing in off the ocean.

Tuesday and Wednesday are expected to be the hottest days of the stretch. Temperatures will climb into the mid to upper 90s, and high humidity will make it feel even hotter. The heat index, which is how hot it actually feels to your body when you combine temperature and humidity, could reach between 95 and 105 degrees. Overnight temperatures will also stay warm, giving people little relief from the heat.

Even though this heat wave may not be as extreme as some recent ones, it still puts people at risk for heat-related illnesses. The best way to stay safe is to spend time in a cool, air-conditioned place during the hottest part of the day. Try to avoid hard physical activity outside, drink plenty of water, and take breaks in the shade if you must be outdoors.

One important warning involves cars. When it is 90 degrees outside, the inside of a parked car can heat up to 109 degrees in just 10 minutes and up to 119 degrees in 30 minutes. Never leave children, pets, or anyone else inside a parked car, and always look before you lock.

Temperatures may drop a little by Thursday and Friday, but highs in the 90s are still possible on both days. That means some communities could experience five straight days of 90-degree heat, which counts as a heat wave. An official heat wave is declared after three or more days in a row with temperatures of 90 degrees or higher. Boston has already recorded 12 days at or above 90 degrees this year, just three fewer than the yearly average.

There is some good news: a better chance of rain may arrive next weekend, which could bring temperatures down. For now, forecasters say to keep checking the latest updates and stay prepared for dangerous heat through the week. Stay with the WBZ Next Weather Team for the latest forecast information.

The temperature inside a car can quickly climb to 109 degrees within 10 minutes when the outside temperature is 90 degrees.
