Science Funding Agency Blocks Money to Top Universities

May 27, 2026 · Nature

The NSF has stopped giving new research grants to Duke, Harvard, Princeton, and Yale without explaining why.

The National Science Foundation has stopped giving new research money to four top universities. Duke University, Harvard University, Princeton University, and Yale University cannot get new grants for science projects. The NSF made this decision on April 9, but they won't explain why. This affects millions of dollars that would normally help important research.

The NSF usually gives $8.8 billion each year to help scientists do research. These four universities normally get lots of money because they do excellent work. But internal documents show that the NSF put these schools "on hold." Since April, almost no new funding has gone to these universities.

Last year, President Trump's government stopped funding to several universities for different reasons. They said some schools didn't protect students from hate speech properly. Harvard University lost about 75% of its research grants and had to go to court. A federal judge said the government acted illegally and told them to stop.

Legal experts think the NSF might be breaking that court order now. David Super, a law professor, said the government is trying to find new ways to punish universities it doesn't like. The White House denies they are taking action against these four schools. But the evidence suggests something unusual is happening.

Scientists at these universities didn't know about the block until reporters told them. Most were afraid to talk about it because they worry about their research. Many of the blocked projects are about math, physics, and engineering. Some focus on quantum science, which the government says is important.

One major project stuck in this mess is called VERENA at Yale University. This team studies diseases to predict the next pandemic threat. They are waiting for more than $2 million that was supposed to come last year. The team leader says people are leaving because they can't get paid.

The administration has bent itself into pretzels to continue actions against universities it dislikes, even in the face of court orders.
