Eddie Nketia to Make Australia Debut at Commonwealth Games Sprint

June 22, 2026 · The Guardian

The 25-year-old sprinter switched from New Zealand and is now aiming to break records for Australia in Glasgow.

Eddie Nketia is one of the most exciting sprinters in the world right now, and he is about to compete for Australia for the very first time. The 25-year-old will race at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, after switching from New Zealand late last year. He was named to Australia's 86-athlete track and field team on Monday and is expected to be one of the biggest stars at the Games.

Nketia has been running incredibly fast in recent months. He posted a wind-assisted time of 9.74 seconds in the 100-meter dash, which is one of the fastest times ever recorded. The current Commonwealth Games record is 9.88 seconds, set by the legendary Usain Bolt at the same Glasgow track back in 2014. Bolt also holds the world record of 9.58 seconds, which he set in 2009.

When asked if he could run even faster at the Games, Nketia was very confident. He said he wanted to run as fast as possible and even mentioned going after the world record. He added that everything would come down to good execution on race day. His teammate Lachie Kennedy, who holds the Australian record of 9.98 seconds, will also compete in Glasgow.

Australian sprint star Gout Gout chose not to take part in the Commonwealth Games, but Nketia and Kennedy will still lead a strong group of Australian sprinters. Nketia spoke warmly about the future of Australian sprinting, saying the relay team and the depth of talent would do wonders going forward. "It's beautiful ... the future's bright and it's going to be awesome, seeing what I can do for the green and gold," he said.

The athletics squad is part of a larger Australian team of 258 competitors across 10 different sports. Other well-known athletes include discus thrower Matt Denny, middle-distance runners Ollie Hoare and Jessica Hull, and pole vaulters Nina Kennedy and Kurtis Marschall. Race walker Jemima Montag is also among the big names heading to Glasgow.

Australian Athletics CEO Simon Hollingsworth praised all the athletes who earned a spot on the team. He said the selections were based on strong performances throughout the season at major championships and international meets. "It's a group that has shown they can compete and win at the highest level, and we are confident they will represent Australia with distinction in Glasgow," he said.
