Durham Art Gallery Opens With Works by Famous Artists

August 21, 2026 · The Guardian

The Light, a new gallery in north-east England, brings world-class art to a region that has long felt left behind.

A brand-new art gallery called The Light has opened its doors in Durham, a city in north-east England. The gallery features works by well-known artists like Tracey Emin, Steve McQueen, and Olafur Eliasson. It opened to the public on Saturday and aims to bring world-class art to a part of England that has often felt overlooked. The building cost £17 million to redevelop and replaces a museum that closed ten years ago, upsetting many local people.

The original building was called the Durham Light Infantry Museum and Art Gallery. It was a place where people could learn about soldiers from the region. Now, the ground floor still tells those military stories, but in a more modern and human way. Upstairs, there is 500 square metres of space for contemporary, or present-day, art.

The opening of The Light is part of a bigger effort to bring arts and culture to places in England that have felt forgotten. Other galleries, like the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead and Mima in Middlesbrough, opened in the early 2000s. For a while, the opening of new, publicly funded regional galleries slowed down. The Light is seen as a fresh start for that movement.

Tony Guillan is the gallery's artistic director, meaning he leads the creative vision for the space. He grew up nearby, on Tyneside, but left at age 18 to pursue a career in the arts. He worked at famous London organisations like the Tate gallery and the Southbank Centre. He said that England is too focused on London, making it hard for people in other regions to build careers in the arts.

The Light is funded by Durham County Council, which is now led by the Reform party after Labour lost the 2024 local elections. Even so, the curators — the people who choose and organise the art — do not appear to be shying away from bold topics. Some of the works on display deal with themes like immigration. Guillan said art will always spark debate, and that the gallery's job is to create space for conversation.

The opening exhibition includes a wide range of artists from around the world. Dan Flavin, an American artist famous for using fluorescent light tubes, has work on display. So does Félix González-Torres, a Cuban-born American artist who died in 1996 at age 38. One of his pieces, made using lightbulbs, was created after the death of his partner from an AIDS-related illness and is about their lasting love.

Natasha Howes, who put together the opening show, said she worked hard to include women and artists from diverse backgrounds. She pointed out that too many art exhibitions are still dominated by white men. She mentioned a festival in Spain where 30 artists were featured but not a single one was a woman. She said that kind of imbalance simply should not be allowed to happen.

Why do you have to leave and move so far away if you want to have a certain type of career?
