Doctor Who TV Show Faces Uncertain Future

June 11, 2026 · U.S. News & World Report

BBC cancels Christmas special and showrunner leaves popular sci-fi series after 60 years.

The famous TV show "Doctor Who" is facing big changes. The BBC network has canceled a Christmas special that was planned for this year. Russell T. Davies, the person who runs the show, is also leaving. This has fans wondering what will happen to their favorite sci-fi series.

Davies was supposed to write the Christmas episode after the last season ended in May 2025. But on Wednesday, the BBC said they decided not to make the Christmas show. The network wants to focus on the show's long-term future instead. They said this decision will help them invest more money in making the show better for years to come.

The BBC is now looking for new production companies to help make the show. Disney+ used to help make and show "Doctor Who" around the world. But that partnership ended in 2025 after just two seasons together.

"Doctor Who" first started in 1963, making it over 60 years old. The show follows a character called the Doctor who travels through time and space. The Doctor comes from a planet called Gallifrey and travels in a machine called the Tardis. From the outside, the Tardis looks like an old British police phone box.

The show has stayed popular for so long because of a clever idea. When the actor playing the Doctor gets tired or wants to leave, the character can "regenerate" into a new body. This means the show can continue with different actors playing the same character. More than twelve different actors have played the Doctor over the years.

Davies brought the show back to TV in 2005 after it was off the air for 16 years. He returned to run the show again in 2022. Davies said the Christmas episode was never actually written and no actor was chosen to play the Doctor in it. He shared his thoughts about the show's future on Instagram, saying fans would have to wait but it would be worth it.

It's all up for grabs, which is so Doctor Who -- exciting and unpredictable and new!
