Do Solar Panels Work in UK Winters and on Cloudy Days?
Solar panels keep making electricity even in cold, grey British weather — but output drops a lot during the darker months.
Solar panels keep making electricity in winter and on cloudy days — they just make less of it. The panels use special cells called PV cells that react to light, not heat, so cold weather on its own doesn't stop them from working. What really matters is how much daylight is available, and in a British winter, that's quite limited. A typical December day has only around eight hours of daylight, compared to about 16 hours in midsummer.
Because of shorter days and heavier cloud cover, winter output can drop to around 15 to 30 per cent of summer levels. January is normally the lowest month for solar generation across the UK. Even so, panels keep producing electricity whenever light hits them, which can still be enough to power fridges, wi-fi routers, and other devices that run throughout the day. It's not the same as summer, but it's far from nothing.
Cloudy skies reduce output but don't stop it, because PV panels can use diffuse light — the scattered daylight that filters through clouds. Some of the newest panels are engineered to be especially good at capturing this low-level light. Rain has a helpful bonus effect too: it washes dust and pollen off the panels, which can improve their performance once the sky clears. Even in heavy rain, panels keep generating power as long as there is still ambient daylight outside.
Snow is the most disruptive winter condition for solar panels. A thick covering blocks light from reaching the cells and can sharply cut output. Luckily, panels are usually installed at an angle so snow tends to slide off when temperatures rise slightly, and their dark surface can absorb enough sunlight to melt snow from below. A light dusting is rarely a serious problem for most systems.
The safest approach when snow covers panels is to wait for it to clear naturally. Climbing on the roof is dangerous and could damage the glass or seals, which might also void the warranty. If you can safely reach the panels from the ground using a long, soft brush without pressing hard, some homeowners do clear snow that way. For most people, though, waiting for the thaw is the wisest choice.
Looking at the whole year, solar panels are still a strong investment for UK homeowners. Summer months produce so much more electricity that they more than make up for the quieter winter period. Homeowners can also earn money by sending surplus electricity back to the grid through the Smart Export Guarantee scheme. Combined with savings on energy bills and protection against rising electricity prices, solar panels make financial sense across all four seasons.
