Derbyshire Toddler Gets World-First Surgery for Rare Skull Condition

Doctors at Great Ormond Street Hospital used brand-new "super elastic" springs to reshape a one-year-old's skull in a surgery never done before.

A one-year-old boy from Chesterfield, Derbyshire, has become the first person in the world to receive a new type of surgery for a rare skull condition. Rory Potter was born in April 2025 with a problem called sagittal craniosynostosis, which causes the skull to grow too long from front to back and too narrow from side to side. Without treatment, the condition can cause learning difficulties and other serious health problems. Doctors at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London used specially made springs to gently reshape his skull — and the results have been remarkable.

Rory's parents, Harry and Jo Potter, noticed something unusual soon after he was born. His head looked longer than they expected, so they raised their concerns with doctors. Tests confirmed that Rory had a severe form of sagittal craniosynostosis, a condition where parts of the skull fuse together too early before birth. The condition affects roughly one in every 1,800 to 2,000 babies in the United Kingdom.

If the condition is not treated, it can lead to a range of serious problems. These include learning difficulties, loss of sight or hearing, breathing issues, and dental problems such as missing or crowded teeth. Doctors usually treat it with skull reshaping surgery, which takes place in the first few months of a baby's life. Because Rory's case was severe, his doctors decided to try a newer, less invasive approach.

For the past twenty years, surgeons have used stainless steel springs to slowly widen the skull and give the brain more room to grow. Now, a team of experts at Great Ormond Street Hospital and University College London has developed a new kind of spring made from a special metal called nitinol. Nitinol is a mix of nickel and titanium, and it has 'super elastic' properties, meaning it can bend and flex more like natural body tissue. Rory was the very first patient in the world to have these new springs fitted.

Professor Owase Jeelani, a brain surgeon at Great Ormond Street Hospital who helped create the springs and led Rory's surgery, explained why the new design is better. He said that traditional stainless steel springs are strong, but they do not always let doctors control exactly how much force is placed on the skull. The new nitinol springs give doctors much more control, and in some cases they may even help children avoid a second surgery. Professor Jeelani called the first surgery 'important progress' and said the team had already seen 'fantastic outcomes.'

Each spring is custom-built to fit a specific child's skull. Before surgery, doctors used CT scans to build a detailed digital model of the child's skull. This allowed the team to predict how the skull would respond to treatment and to design springs that would apply just the right amount of force. Once the springs are put in place, they stay there for several weeks or months, slowly reshaping the skull before being taken out.

Rory's operation took just 45 minutes, and he only had to spend one night in the hospital. Nine weeks later, the springs were removed after his skull reached the right shape. The new technology means children like Rory can avoid longer, more complicated surgeries and are less likely to need blood transfusions during treatment. Professor Silvia Schievano, who led the team of biomedical engineers at University College London, said it was 'a very proud moment' to see the technology used successfully after many years of research.

Today, Rory is doing wonderfully well. His mother Jo, a 36-year-old project manager, described him as 'happy, cheeky and full of energy.' She said you would never guess what he had been through, as he is hitting all the normal milestones for a child his age. Rory has gone home to Derbyshire, where he lives with his older brother Oscar, who is three, and the family dog Ada.

"These new nitinol springs give us much greater flexibility and, in some cases, can prevent the need for further surgery."
