When Depression Affects Both People in a Relationship

June 8, 2026 · Deutsche Welle

Experts say family members need to take care of themselves too when a loved one has depression.

Depression is a serious mental illness that affects millions of people around the world. When someone has depression, they feel very sad and hopeless for weeks or months at a time. But depression doesn't just hurt the person who has it. It also affects their family members, especially their husband or wife. Learning how to help someone with depression while taking care of yourself is very important.

Stefan and Jessica's story shows how depression can change a relationship. Jessica got depression during the COVID-19 pandemic six years ago. She had to stop working for three years and spent time in hospitals trying different treatments. Stefan watched his wife struggle and tried to help by doing everything for her. But this actually made things worse because Jessica felt guilty and useless.

Experts like Birgit Esch teach families better ways to help. Esch is a therapist who has worked with people with mental illness for many years. She runs classes where family members learn about depression and how to set healthy boundaries. The most important lesson is that family members need to take care of themselves too. If they don't, they can't really help their loved one get better.

Communication becomes very difficult when depression is involved. The person with depression might get angry easily or withdraw from conversations. Family members often feel like they're walking on eggshells, afraid to say the wrong thing. Stefan and Jessica found that texting worked better than talking face-to-face for difficult topics. This gave Jessica time to think before responding and reduced the chance of arguments.

Recovery from depression takes time and patience. Jessica is now working part-time and can do some things she couldn't do before, like grocery shopping. These might seem like small things, but they're actually big victories for someone with depression. Stefan has learned to celebrate these small steps instead of expecting everything to go back to normal right away. Both Stefan and Jessica are working hard to build a new kind of relationship that includes dealing with depression.
