Deion Sanders Welcomes the Challenge of Taking On Georgia Tech in Week 1

September 2, 2026 · CBS News

Coach Prime says the Colorado Buffaloes are ready for a tough opener as they kick off a new season with fresh coaches and a new offense.

The Colorado Buffaloes football team opens its season on Thursday night against Georgia Tech. Head coach Deion Sanders, also known as 'Coach Prime,' is entering his fourth year leading the team. Sanders says he is not afraid of a tough opening game and believes his squad is ready to compete.

Sanders spoke about the season on a show called 'Coach Prime's Playbook with Romi Bean.' He said he wants his team to go after hard challenges, not run from them. 'We want the smoke. We want the heat. It's gonna be a great contest,' Sanders said.

Last season was difficult for the Buffaloes, but Sanders feels good about this year. One big reason is quarterback Julian 'JuJu' Lewis, who is 18 years old and returning to lead the team. Sanders also brought in new coaches during the offseason to help turn things around.

Two of those new coaches are on opposite sides of the ball. Chris Marve takes charge of the defense, while Brennan Marion was hired to run the offense. Marion brings a fast-moving style called the 'Go-Go' offense, which has been described as basketball on grass.

Sanders was away from the team last year because he was fighting bladder cancer. This offseason, he made sure to spend more time with his players. To help the team bond, he took them to Colorado Springs for a few days during training camp.

The Buffaloes added some strong linebackers this season. Gideon Lampron came from Bowling Green, Liona Lefau came from Texas, and Tyler Martinez joined from New Mexico State. Lampron said he spends a lot of time with his new teammates outside of football.

One concern for the team is size. A practice video went online and got a lot of attention because some people said the players looked small. Offensive coordinator Brennan Marion did not let it bother him, saying the team's speed and skill will matter more when games are played.

Colorado also lost some important players. Offensive tackle Jordan Seaton transferred to LSU, and top wide receiver Omarion Miller moved to Arizona State after leading the team with 45 catches and 808 yards last season. Defensive backs DJ McKinney and Tawfiq Byard also left for other schools.

"We want the smoke. We want the heat. It's gonna be a great contest."
