NBA Star Victor Wembanyama Called a Villain After Rough Play

June 9, 2026 · Newsweek

Sacramento Kings player De'Aaron Fox defends the Spurs center after critics say he plays too rough.

The controversy started during Game 3 of the NBA Finals against the New York Knicks. Wembanyama, who is 7 feet 4 inches tall, pushed Knicks player Jalen Brunson from behind. Brunson is only 6 feet 2 inches tall, making the push look very unfair. The referees did not call a foul on the play, which made many fans angry.

After the game, reporters asked if Wembanyama was trying to be a villain. Sacramento Kings player De'Aaron Fox came to his defense. Fox said Wembanyama is not trying to be mean or scary. He explained that basketball is a physical sport where players get hit a lot.

The Spurs won that game 115-111 at Madison Square Garden in New York. Wembanyama and his teammate Stephon Castle scored 55 points together. But the crowd booed Wembanyama loudly throughout the game. Some fans even cursed at him because they were so upset about his rough play.

This is not the first time Wembanyama has gotten in trouble for playing too rough. In an earlier playoff series against the Minnesota Timberwolves, he hit player Naz Reid with his elbow near the neck. The referees reviewed that play and gave him a flagrant foul. They also kicked him out of that game for dangerous play.

If you get hit, you hit back.
