Date Set for Opening of $915M Powerhouse Parramatta

The Powerhouse Parramatta, a brand-new $915 million museum in Western Sydney, will open to the public on November 7. It will be the first state cultural institution ever built in Western Sydney. Best of all, entry to the museum is completely free, so anyone can visit without paying a cent.

Construction of the museum was finished in May this year, about four years after building work first began. The New South Wales government made the announcement that the project was complete. It took years of planning and hard work to bring the massive building to life.

The museum is made up of seven large zones for visitors to explore. One of the most impressive spaces stands 18 metres high and covers more than 2,200 square metres — that's bigger than many school ovals. This giant space will be home to Task Eternal, the biggest exhibition about space exploration ever held in Australia.

The first exhibition, Task Eternal, will also feature a historic Qantas Avro 504k aircraft as one of its star objects. In total, the first five exhibitions will display more than 3,000 objects from around the world. More than 1,600 of those objects come from the Powerhouse's own collection.

A second major exhibition, called The Mall, was also announced alongside the opening date. It looks at the history, growth, and cultural importance of shopping malls over the decades. Both exhibitions aim to show visitors something surprising and thought-provoking about the world around them.

NSW Arts Minister John Graham called the opening the most important cultural project since the Sydney Opera House was built. He said the museum would be just as special to people once they saw it in person. 'I think the reaction from the public will be the same as they see this incredible building on the banks of the river right in the heart of Parramatta,' he said.

Minister Graham also pointed out that free entry makes the museum open to everyone, including families who may be struggling with the rising cost of living. He admitted that building new cultural institutions is never easy, and that even the Opera House was controversial when it was being built. But he believes that, just like the Opera House, Powerhouse Parramatta will win people over once they walk through the doors.

Powerhouse CEO Lisa Havilah said she was excited to finally share the opening date with the public. She described the museum as a place where local ideas meet global thinking. 'We are thrilled to be opening our doors this November with five world-class exhibitions and a program that is as bold and diverse as the communities it serves,' she said.
