Scientists Create New Artificial Muscles That Are Safe for the Human Body

Special fibers could one day help replace damaged heart or skeletal muscles in people.

Scientists in Germany have made a major breakthrough in artificial muscle technology. They created special fibers that work like real muscles but are safe for the human body. The fibers are made from a material called liquid crystal elastomers. These materials can contract and expand just like the muscles in our arms and legs.

The research team tested their new artificial muscles carefully. They found the fibers can do almost as much work as real human skeletal muscles. The artificial muscles can contract in less than half a second, which is very fast. They also produce power levels similar to the muscles we use to walk and run.

What makes this discovery special is that the artificial muscles are safe for living cells. Earlier artificial muscles used chemicals that could harm the body. The new fibers use a different chemical called MBB that doesn't damage living tissue. This means doctors might be able to use them inside people's bodies someday.

The artificial muscles could help many people with medical problems. They might be used to replace damaged heart muscles in patients with heart disease. They could also help people who have lost muscles due to accidents or illness. The technology might even make artificial limbs work more like real arms and legs.
