Cornwall Gets New Lithium Mine Project

June 4, 2026 · BBC

Government makes it easier for company to build battery material factory in old clay pit.

A company wants to build a lithium mine in Cornwall, England. The British government just made it easier for this to happen. They chose one main group to check if the project is safe for the environment. This should help the company get permission faster than before.

The company is called Cornish Lithium. They want to use an old china clay pit in St Dennis to make lithium. Lithium is a special metal that goes into batteries for electric cars. It also helps make other clean energy machines work better.

The old pit has been empty since 2016 when it stopped making china clay. Now Cornish Lithium wants to turn it into a lithium factory. They say this will create more than 300 good jobs for local people. The factory could make up to 10,000 tonnes of lithium each year.

Some people in the area are worried about the project. They want to make sure it won't hurt the environment or their community. The government has called this project very important for the whole country. This means the national government will decide if it can be built, not just the local town council.

Before this change, many different groups had to check the project. Now the Environment Agency will be the main group in charge. They will work with other organizations like Natural England. This should make the process faster and clearer for everyone.

Steve Marks works for the Environment Agency in that area. He said having one main regulator will help them work better with other government groups. The new system should cut down on delays while keeping the environment safe. Officials promise that all safety checks will still happen.

The company plans to start building in 2028. They will submit their official papers in 2027. These papers will ask for permission to build and operate the lithium mine.

Having one clear environmental regulator will help us work more effectively with our partners across government to regulate projects such as Trelavour Lithium.
