Kyle Tucker Becomes an Unlikely Hero as Dodgers Win NLDS Opener
A player who struggled all season hit a big home run to help the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Atlanta Braves in Game 1 of the playoffs.
The Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Atlanta Braves 5–3 on Saturday in Game 1 of the National League Division Series. The game was played at Dodger Stadium in hot, 100-degree weather. One of the biggest moments came from an unexpected player — right fielder Kyle Tucker, who had a rough regular season but hit a huge home run when the team needed it most.
Tucker stepped up to bat in the sixth inning with the Dodgers leading by just one run. Many fans were unsure what to expect from him. He had batted only .196 at home during the regular season and had often looked lost at the plate. But on the second pitch from Braves pitcher AJ Smith-Shawver, Tucker drove the ball 408 feet over the right-field fence for a two-run home run. That hit gave the Dodgers a 4–1 lead and took the energy out of the Braves for good.
After Tucker crossed home plate, something surprising happened — he smiled. It was a moment that meant a lot, because Tucker had been through a tough year. Fans had booed him earlier in the season, and many felt he was not worth his $60 million annual salary, the highest in baseball. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts praised Tucker for sticking with it. 'I give him a lot of credit for grinding through it, not running from it, always posting and kind of getting to the other side of it,' Roberts said.
Tucker was not the only hero on Saturday. Pitcher Tarik Skubal had a strong start in his first Dodger playoff game. He was traded to Los Angeles from the Detroit Tigers on August 2, and he fit right in. Skubal pitched six innings, gave up only two hits, struck out seven batters, and retired 15 batters in a row at one point. He was sharp and in control for most of his time on the mound.
Outfielder Teoscar Hernández also had a big day. He hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning to give the Dodgers the early lead. Hernández had a bumpy regular season and almost did not start, but in the playoffs he has been one of the team's best hitters. He leads the Dodgers with 27 RBIs over the last three postseasons. First baseman Max Muncy added another home run in the sixth inning to push the lead to 5–1.
The Dodgers' bullpen made things a little scary near the end. In the ninth inning, reliever Tanner Scott gave up a two-run home run to Braves second baseman Ozzie Albies, cutting the lead to 5–3. Scott was then replaced by Evan Phillips, who got the last out and saved the win. It was a nervous ending, but the Dodgers held on.
The Braves came into this series already tired from their tough wild-card series against the Philadelphia Phillies the week before. Their pitching staff was worn out, and they had to use their bullpen for eight of the nine innings on Saturday. They may need their ace, Chris Sale, to pitch on short rest in Game 2, which is risky for any pitcher.
There were also questions about two of the Dodgers' biggest stars — Shohei Ohtani and Freddie Freeman. Both players are dealing with injuries and have not been at their best lately. Ohtani has not hit a home run since August 18 and is batting just .157 during that stretch. He said through his interpreter, 'As of now, it's something I'm just going to have to manage.' The Dodgers will need more from both players if they want to keep winning.
With the Braves looking tired and the Dodgers full of confidence, Los Angeles seems to be in great shape to win the series. Tucker's home run may have been the turning point not just for this game, but for his whole time with the team. If the Dodgers go on to win the championship, Saturday afternoon in the LA heat might be remembered as the day Kyle Tucker finally won over the fans.
Our fans, they really remember what you do in the postseason. So this is certainly a way to change the story for a season in 2026.
