Scientists Discover How Gut Bacteria Help Your Body Fight Infections

June 3, 2026 · Nature

Tiny bacteria in your stomach make special chemicals that train your immune system to stay healthy.

Scientists have discovered something amazing about the bacteria living in your gut. These tiny helpers make a special chemical that teaches your immune system how to fight off dangerous germs. The bacteria work like teachers, showing your body's defenses how to tell good microbes from bad ones. This discovery could help doctors find new ways to keep people healthy.

Your intestines are home to trillions of bacteria that help your body in many ways. Most of these bacteria are helpful friends, not enemies. They help break down food, make important vitamins, and protect you from harmful invaders. Scientists wanted to learn exactly how these bacteria help your immune system stay strong.

The research team studied over 100 different types of gut bacteria. They discovered that some bacteria make acetylcholine, a chemical messenger that's usually made by your brain. This chemical helps muscles move and organs work properly. Scientists were excited to find that gut bacteria could make this important substance too.

When gut bacteria make acetylcholine, it sends messages to nearby immune cells. These immune cells act like soldiers protecting your body from invaders. The acetylcholine helps train these soldier cells to recognize which bacteria are friends and which are enemies. It also helps them remember how to fight off germs that could make you sick.

The scientists tested their discovery using mice in the laboratory. Some mice had normal bacteria that could make acetylcholine in their guts. Other mice had bacteria that couldn't produce this helpful chemical. The mice with acetylcholine-making bacteria stayed much healthier when scientists exposed them to dangerous germs.

These bacteria are like helpful teachers for your immune system.
