Christian Horner Shows Up at Silverstone and Talks About Returning to F1

July 5, 2026 · The Independent

The former Red Bull boss says he's in no rush to come back, but wants the right job if he does.

Christian Horner showed up at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone recently — his first time back in a Formula 1 paddock since he was fired from Red Bull Racing last year. The 52-year-old spoke with Sky Sports reporter Craig Slater about what he has been up to and whether he plans to return to F1. Horner was let go from his job as Red Bull's team principal just two days after last year's race at the same track. His return to Silverstone drew a lot of attention from fans and people in the racing world.

Horner spent 20 years leading Red Bull Racing and helped the team win eight world drivers' championships and six constructors' titles. Those are huge achievements in Formula 1, and many people think he is one of the best team bosses the sport has ever seen. After losing his job, Horner said he had 'unfinished business' in F1, which suggested he wanted to come back someday. Still, he told Sky Sports that he has been enjoying his time away from the busy world of racing.

Several F1 teams have been linked to Horner in recent months. Reports have connected him to Alpine, Aston Martin, and even BYD, a large Chinese car company that may want to start a brand-new F1 team. A new team would become the 12th team on the grid, which is something F1 has been considering for a while. However, Horner did not confirm any of these rumors when he spoke at Silverstone.

When asked about the BYD reports, Horner said the company is a 'huge entity' but brushed off the speculation. He joked that he had been connected to almost every team on the grid at this point. He said he was simply at Silverstone as a fan and was there to enjoy the race. He has not missed a British Grand Prix since 1993, making it a personal tradition for him.

Horner also spoke briefly about Aston Martin, calling it 'a great British brand.' He said it was sad to see the team struggling on the track this season. But again, he did not say anything about taking a job there. He wished all the teams well and kept his answers friendly but vague.

Despite all the guessing about his future, Horner kept his message simple. He said he would only return to F1 if the opportunity was the right one — meaning a team that could actually compete to win. He also praised the sport, saying that interest in Formula 1 is 'sky high' right now. For fans hoping to see him back on the pit wall, it seems like the wait may continue a little longer.

"I'd only look at doing the right thing, something that had an opportunity to win at the end of the day."
