Chinese Bullet Train Goes from 0 to 800 km/h in 5 Seconds
An experimental maglev train in China shattered its own world record for acceleration, raising hopes for ultra-high-speed travel in the future.
Scientists in China have set a stunning new world record. An experimental magnetic train — called a maglev — blasted from a complete stop to 800 kilometers per hour in just 5.3 seconds. The test took place on a one-kilometer track at the Donghu Laboratory in Hubei province, China. This record-breaking run shows that ultra-high-speed transportation could one day become a reality.
The train does not use wheels or fuel like a normal train. Instead, it uses powerful magnets to lift itself slightly above the track, which removes the friction that would normally slow it down. Then, magnetic waves produced by coils around the track push the train forward at incredible speeds. This combination of floating and magnetic pushing is what makes maglev trains so fast.
After reaching 800 km/h, the train did not crash or spin out of control. It slowed down smoothly and came to a complete stop within about 200 meters. This showed that researchers had also developed a reliable braking system to match the train's extreme speed. Both going fast and stopping safely are important steps toward making this technology useful someday.
This was not the first time this train made history. It first set a world record in June 2025, when it reached about 650 km/h in seven seconds. Since then, it has broken its own record two more times, reaching 700 km/h and then 798 km/h, while also cutting down the time it takes to get there. That means the same train has broken the world record for short-distance maglev acceleration three times in just six months.
During each test run, engineers pushed important technologies to their limits. These included systems for delivering large amounts of power quickly, controlling the train's magnetic lift at high speeds, and stopping the train safely in an emergency. National broadcaster CCTV reported on the tests and the progress researchers have made. Each successful run teaches scientists more about what these systems can handle.
For comparison, maglev trains that carry passengers today travel at around 320 km/h. China's fastest commercial maglev train, the Fuxing rail, tops out at 350 km/h. The new experimental train is moving more than twice as fast as anything currently carrying people. That gap shows just how far ahead of everyday technology this research really is.
Other Chinese scientists are also working on similar projects. Researchers at the National University of Defence Technology ran a test where a maglev reached 697 km/h in just two seconds. Some teams are even exploring trains that travel inside tubes with very little air, which could push speeds even higher. These vacuum tube trains, sometimes called hyperloops, could one day connect cities at jaw-dropping speeds.
Right now, this technology is not ready to carry human passengers. However, researchers believe the ideas behind it could be used to launch rockets or fighter jets into the air. There are also big challenges still to solve, such as the cost of building the special tracks and making sure passengers would stay safe. Scientists remain hopeful that, with more research, these hurdles can be overcome.
It was the third time in six months that the same train had broken the world record for short-distance maglev acceleration.
