Chase Brown Makes Bold Claim About Bengals Defense Before Season

Cincinnati Bengals running back Chase Brown made a big prediction about his team's defense during training camp this summer. Last season, the Bengals had one of the worst defenses in the NFL, allowing nearly 381 yards per game. But Brown says things look very different this year, and he's not afraid to say so out loud.

Brown spoke to NFL Network reporters at training camp and gave a strong review of what he's seen from his teammates on defense. He pointed to new players like defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence, defensive end Boye Mafe, and safety Bryan Cook as reasons why the unit looks so much better. 'They're a really good defense, man. They've been doing a really good job this training camp,' Brown said.

Brown went even further when talking about the pressure the defense has been putting on quarterback Joe Burrow during practice. He said the amount of 'havoc' the defense is causing up front has been impressive to watch. 'I feel comfortable saying this: that's a top 10, top five defense,' he stated. Brown also called the way players are talking and working together 'encouraging' and 'really good to see.'

The Bengals worked hard this offseason to fix their defensive problems by bringing in several experienced players. They traded with the New York Giants to get Pro Bowl nose tackle Dexter Lawrence, who is known as one of the best at his position. They also signed Boye Mafe to a three-year, $60 million contract after he won a Super Bowl with the Seattle Seahawks.

Cincinnati also added safety Bryan Cook, who signed a three-year, $40.25 million deal. Cook spent four seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs and won two Super Bowl rings there. Adding players with that kind of winning experience could make a big difference for the Bengals this season.

The Bengals also looked to the NFL Draft to add young defensive talent. They picked defensive end Cashius Howell from Texas A&M in the second round and cornerback Tacario Davis from Washington in the third round. Neither was a first-round pick, but both are expected to help the defense right away.

Last season, the Bengals allowed 380.9 yards per game, which was the second-worst total in the entire NFL. Only the Washington Commanders gave up more yards than Cincinnati did. The Bengals also allowed opponents to score an average of 28.9 points per game, which was third-worst in the league.

The regular season will be the true test of whether Brown's prediction comes true. The Bengals open their season at home against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, September 13. If the defense plays as well as Brown believes it can, Cincinnati could be a much tougher team to beat this year.
