CBS News Makes Big Changes to Famous TV Show '60 Minutes'

May 28, 2026 · AP NEWS

Network hires new leader to help the long-running news program reach younger viewers.

CBS News has made major changes to its famous TV show '60 Minutes.' The network's top editor, Bari Weiss, replaced the show's main producer this week. She hired Nick Bilton, a technology reporter, to take over the popular Sunday night program. Weiss said the changes were needed to help the show succeed in modern times.

The old producer, Tanya Simon, is leaving after working at '60 Minutes' for 30 years. She had only been the main producer for about one year. CBS leaders said they wanted to build a show that works better in the 21st century. This means making '60 Minutes' more than just a one-hour TV show and helping it reach people in new ways.

Bilton used to write about technology for the New York Times newspaper. He has also made documentaries, which are fact-based movies. CBS bosses said Bilton has the energy and big ideas that the show's creators had when they first started '60 Minutes' many years ago. They believe he is the perfect person for this important job.

Two reporters who worked on the show, Sharyn Alfonsi and Cecilia Vega, also lost their jobs. Alfonsi had recently done a story about prisons in El Salvador that was pulled from the air for a while. Both reporters were let go as part of the big changes happening at CBS News.

Many people expected Bari Weiss to make major changes when she was hired in October. Weiss started a news website called Free Press and has become well-known in the journalism world. Some people support her ideas, while others disagree with her approach to news reporting.

In a message to CBS workers, Bilton said '60 Minutes' is the most important TV news show America has ever created. He explained that the show has stayed popular even as the world has changed around it. However, he believes the show must change with the times to survive for many more years. He wants to keep what makes '60 Minutes' special while finding new ways to tell stories that matter to people today.

The fact that this show has remained a fixed point in a culture is part of why this show still matters as much as it does.
