Food Prices Will Stay High for UK Families

May 25, 2026 · The Independent

Bread and pasta costs remain expensive due to wars and weather problems around the world.

British families will continue paying high prices for basic foods like bread and pasta. A new report shows that food costs stay expensive for a long time after world events cause problems. Wars in the Middle East and bad weather patterns are making grocery shopping more costly for everyone. Scientists who study energy and climate found this pattern by looking at 30 years of data.

When big problems happen around the world, food prices go up quickly like rockets. But when the problems end, prices come down very slowly like feathers floating down. This means families keep paying high prices long after the original problem is over. The scientists found that food prices only drop back down by 1 percent after six months. Even after two years, prices only go down by 7 percent from their high point.

Chris Jaccarini, who studies food costs, said wars and extreme weather keep making weekly shopping more expensive. The conflict in the Middle East is driving up costs for oil, gas, and fertilizer that farmers need. England has had three of its worst harvests in the past five years. He said the only way to stop floods and droughts is to use less oil and gas and balance the climate again.

Families have already seen food prices rise more than 40 percent since mid-2021. For families with children in the lowest income group, a healthy diet now costs around 70 percent of their spending money after paying for housing. The think tank's report shows UK food prices could be 50 percent higher by November compared to mid-2021 levels. This would mean price growth that took nearly 20 years before the crisis would happen in just over five years.

War and extreme weather are increasingly pushing up the cost of the weekly shop.
