Smart Robot Named Atlas Learns to Work in Car Factory
Boston Dynamics' humanoid robot is being trained to help workers at a Hyundai car plant in Georgia.
A smart robot named Atlas is learning to work at a car factory in Georgia. The robot was built by Boston Dynamics, a company in Massachusetts that makes advanced robots. Atlas stands five feet nine inches tall and weighs 200 pounds. It has an artificial intelligence brain that helps it learn new tasks.
Atlas looks like a person and can move like one too. It has arms, legs, and a head with sensors that work like eyes. The robot's brain uses special computer chips made by Nvidia. These are the same type of chips that power smart computer programs like ChatGPT.
At the Hyundai factory, Atlas is learning to sort car parts. The robot practices moving roof racks from one place to another without any help from humans. This is the first time Atlas has worked in a real factory instead of just in a laboratory. Engineers are watching closely to see how well the robot can do its job.
The robot learns in different ways. Sometimes engineers wear special headsets and control Atlas directly. This teaches the robot exactly how to move its arms and hands. Other times, they record how real people move and then teach Atlas to copy those movements.
Some people worry that robots like Atlas will take away jobs from human workers. Robert Playter, who used to be the CEO of Boston Dynamics, says this is not the goal. He explains that robots will mainly do dangerous or boring jobs that humans do not want to do. People will still be needed to build, train, and fix the robots.
We really want superhuman capabilities.
