Bleach Festival Turns Up the Volume

The Bleach Festival is coming back to Australia's Gold Coast from October 1 to 11, and it's bigger than ever. For 11 days, the festival will fill the city with music, dance, art, and theatre. Most events are free and open to all ages, so everyone is welcome to join the fun.

This year, Bleach has a brand-new artistic director named Felix Preval. He moved the festival to October so the warm spring weather could be part of the experience. 'It's a whole new chapter for Bleach and the festival will look and feel quite new this year,' Preval says. He wants the energy to spill out of the indoor venues and spread across the HOTA precinct — HOTA stands for Home of the Arts.

The festival will kick off with a big opening event called Beacon. It was created by UK artist Morag Myerscough and features hundreds of local Gold Coast residents. As the sun goes down, colourful lights will come on, and a choir of 100 people will sing to get the crowd excited. It promises to be a huge splash of colour, movement, poetry, and song.

There will also be a free outdoor concert series with some amazing performers. Lady Blackbird, who is known around the world, will bring her powerful mix of neo-soul and jazz music. Joining her are Electric Fields, an Australian duo famous from Eurovision, who blend traditional Indigenous culture with electronic music. Fans are encouraged to bring a picnic and enjoy the night under the stars.

New Zealand band Six60 will also perform at the festival. They are known for mixing pop, reggae, and soul into a feel-good sound that fills stadiums. Their show is sure to get everyone on their feet and in a great mood.

For something wilder, a new circus show called Ocker will make its world debut. It is performed by Na Djinang Circus, a First Nations company, and features daring acrobatics and playful chaos. Audiences can also look forward to The Butterfly Who Flew Into the Rave, a dance show where three performers dance non-stop for a full hour of high-energy techno music. Another dance show, Cuddle, mixes martial arts and figure skating in a totally unexpected and surreal way.

If you want something more relaxed, check out Shundori, a video art installation by Naina Sen. It took more than five years to make and features more than 500 women from India and the Indian community in Australia. The result is a rich and immersive experience that is very different from the loud and energetic shows.

Food lovers will also find something exciting at Bleach. A pop-up dining experience called Wilderness will take over the Exhibitionist Bar with a creative spin on traditional Balkan street food. The menu is inspired by an art installation called Kaleidoscope Skies, and guests can even order a special fruity drink made with brandy, mountain herbs, and butterfly pea flower. It is a unique mix of food, drink, and high art all in one place.

Almost all events at Bleach Festival are free, and the program runs from midday to midnight each day. Preval wants both locals and visitors to make the most of every moment. 'We'd love the Gold Coast and our visiting friends to dive in — come early, and stay late!' he says. With so much to see and do, there has never been a better reason to head to the Gold Coast this October.
