Blake Griffin to host weekly late-night talk show on Prime Video

Blake Griffin, a retired NBA star who made fans cheer with powerful slam dunks, is now ready for a very different spotlight. The six-time NBA All-Star is launching a weekly late-night talk show called 'The Stepback with Blake Griffin.' It will debut on October 20 — the first day of the NBA season — on Prime Video and YouTube.

The show will be produced by Wondery, a podcast studio owned by Amazon. Wondery also makes 'New Heights with Jason & Travis Kelce,' another popular sports show. Griffin confirmed the news himself on social media after it was first reported by 'The Hollywood Reporter.'

Sitting behind a desk, Griffin will talk about big topics in the sports world. He plans to cover issues like NIL deals for college athletes, taxpayer-funded sports stadiums, and gambling in sports. He will also touch on political topics that affect the world of athletics.

Griffin says the show is inspired by his love of popular late-night programs. He has wanted to blend his passion for sports with his sense of humor for a long time. 'I've watched and idolized shows like The Daily Show and Last Week Tonight, so to follow in their footsteps while putting my own stamp on the genre is an amazing opportunity that I'm grateful to take part in,' he said.

This is not Griffin's first time trying to make people laugh. He starred in a four-episode comedy series called 'Comedy by Blake' with Funny or Die back in 2018. He also appeared in a 2016 episode of Comedy Central's 'Broad City' and has performed stand-up comedy at the Laugh Factory in Los Angeles.

Episodes of 'The Stepback' have already been filmed in front of a live audience and are being edited for release. A new episode will come out every Tuesday, with Griffin's own commentary as the main focus. Fans of both sports and comedy will have something new to look forward to each week.

Griffin played in the NBA for 14 years, from 2010 to 2023, suiting up for the LA Clippers, Detroit Pistons, Brooklyn Nets, and Boston Celtics. He earned five All-NBA selections during that time and was considered for the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame this year, though he was not chosen. Toward the end of his career, he played very little — but it seems all that time on the bench gave him a chance to prepare for his next big move.
