College Football Player Gets Court Help in Gambling Case
Texas Tech quarterback fights NCAA ban after admitting to betting on his own team.
A college football player is fighting to keep playing after the NCAA tried to ban him for gambling. Brendan Sorsby plays quarterback for Texas Tech University. He admitted to betting thousands of dollars on football games, including his own team. A Texas judge has temporarily stopped the NCAA from banning him.
The NCAA has strict rules about gambling. Players cannot bet on any college sports, especially their own games. The organization says this protects the fairness of sports. When players bet on their own teams, it can make people wonder if the games are honest.
Sorsby started playing college football at Indiana University in 2022. He later moved to Cincinnati and then to Texas Tech this year. During his time at Indiana, he placed many bets on his team's games. Investigators found he made thousands of bets worth at least $90,000.
In April, Texas Tech announced that Sorsby was getting help for gambling addiction. He went to a treatment center to work on his problems. The school said doctors had diagnosed him with gambling addiction and anxiety. Texas Tech supported him during this difficult time.
The NCAA made its decision in late May. They said Sorsby could never play college football again. The organization explained that betting on your own team is always wrong. They said every player deserves to know they are playing in fair games.
But Sorsby's lawyers took the case to court in Texas. Judge Ken Curry heard the case and made an important decision. He said the NCAA could not ban Sorsby right now. The judge scheduled a full trial for February 2027.
You get the feeling unless someone comes down on them, they are going to let him play.
