Beer and Banter With Jamie Vardy or the Good Old BBC: Who Covered the Bundesliga Better?

Former England striker Jamie Vardy hosted his very first watch-along show for Germany's top football league, the Bundesliga, on Friday night. His YouTube stream went up against free BBC coverage of the same match — Bayern Munich vs. Stuttgart. The two very different broadcasts showed that there is more than one way to enjoy a football game.

Vardy, who is 39 years old, played for Leicester City for 13 years before spending one season in Italy with Cremonese. He launched his YouTube and podcast series, called 'Jamie Vardy's Having A Party,' in June. His deal covers seven Bundesliga games to be shown live in the UK and Ireland this season, giving fans a new way to watch German football.

Sitting beside Vardy was Christian Fuchs, a 40-year-old Austrian who was his teammate at Leicester. Fuchs played for several German clubs before joining Leicester in 2015, so he knew a lot about the Bundesliga from personal experience. Hosting the show was Manish Bhasin, a TV presenter from Leicester with more than 20 years in sports broadcasting, who kept the conversation on track.

The Bundesliga has been trying to reach new audiences in creative ways. A YouTuber named Mark Goldbridge streamed 20 matches last season and will show 15 more this year. Brazilian World Cup winner Romario was also announced as a rights-holder, with his YouTube channel showing Bundesliga games in Brazil.

The BBC covered the match in a traditional way. Its commentators described the action clearly, followed attacks as they built up, and stayed unseen so the football could take centre stage. When Bayern scored the opening goal, BBC viewers heard the full description right away.

Vardy's stream worked very differently, with team sheets, player stats, and live graphics on screen. Viewers could send in questions and even help steer the conversation. One viewer asked Vardy which Bundesliga team he would support, and he quickly ruled out Bayern Munich, saying 'I'm not a glory-hunter' before choosing Borussia Dortmund.

Some of the best moments came from personal questions sent in by viewers. Vardy talked about Harry Kane, who spent time on loan at Leicester back in 2012–13, describing him as quiet and hard-working. But he was surprised when the young Kane once stood up after a defeat and told older teammates they needed to start winning — a story the BBC could never have shared.

Vardy also opened up about his tough season in Italy, at first brushing it off before admitting it had been hard for his family. 'It was horrible to see the family struggle,' he said. 'As a dad, it was horrible.' While he was talking, Stuttgart scored their equaliser — and the BBC covered the goal instantly, while Vardy's stream stayed on the personal moment.

Fuchs had a funny moment when he worried about getting facts wrong in front of the 'millions of people watching us' — but the counter showed just 932 viewers at that second. The stream's audience grew during the match, rising from 429 before kick-off to a high of 941 in the second half. They were small numbers, but clearly a loyal group.

By the end, Bayern had turned a close game into a comfortable win, and Vardy was sipping a beer as the watch-along wound down. If you mainly wanted to follow the match, the BBC was clearer and easier to follow. But Vardy's stream offered something different — personal stories, laughs, and honest conversations that made it feel like watching football with friends.
